Samurai 7 is quite obviously based on one of the most famous and beloved samurai movies of all time "7 Samurai". The story is essentially the same as the movie.

A small village that is plagued by bandits for their food and women. Young women get kidnapped, rice gets stolen, etc... So, the village elder's daughter goes out to the "big city" to find herself 7 samurai. Well, she comes across one immediately, and he tells her that he'd need a team of 7 to win, so, that's where the title is from.

Anyway... a lot of the series is very similar to the movie, even a few of the jokes are the same (one samurai isn't actually of noble descent, but tries to fake it with a birth certificate he stole, the joke is that it says he is 7 years old). Of course, this is an anime, so it's far far far more ridiculous.

The bandits in the anime are these robotic harvest droids, the setting is that weird "post-alien technology advent in the middle of feudal times" that is somewhat popularish. Think StarWars without people going to space. People live in these crude old-timey dwellings and walk dirt roads, but they also have robot, energy weapons, and whatnot.

Sounds cheesy? Nope. It's very well done and there is a lot of action in the beginning. Unfortunately it gets rather dull near the end.

Did I mention it has possibly the best opening scene of almost any anime I've ever seen? Take a look:

<noembed>http://www.youtube.com/v/ugjfpJ9-X9w&rel=0&fs=1</noembed>

All in all if the series kept up after episode 15 through to the end it would have been an easy 9/10, but it didn't, so it gets a 7/10.

Samurai Champloo had a very strong start with a cute heroine with two very different samurai in tote.

The refined Jin and wild Mugen almost never agree on anything and fight a lot.

It, of course, takes place just before or during the revolution (like everything...) and basically is about a search for the "Sunflower Samurai".

What? Yeah, the Sunflower Samurai.... Who apparently makes dreams come true.

They tried to dress it up with fantastic animation, dialogue, and fight scenes (which are some of the best I've ever seen). ...but that doesn't hide the fact that the entire premise of the series is RETARDED.

After a few good episodes the series takes a nose dive when they introduce character #4, who is some gay European samurai. Yeah, a European samurai, and when I said "gay", I meant it literally. He was apparently driven out of Europe due to gay persecution to go and live in the "more accepting" Japan.

So, the series suddenly changes into this big retarded journey to learn more about some (I'm hoping-ly) fake gay exodus that took place in the 1800s.

About two episodes into this portion of the story and I stopped watching, because it stopped having action, and instead had pie-eating contests, and pro-gay propaganda.

That gay European samurai apparently likes Japan so much because women aren't allowed to join the theater (much like in Europe back in Shakespearean times) and he really liked knowing that "Yamato Nadesico" was a man in makeup. Seriously.

1/10 - If it wasn't for the action I'd have given it a 0.

After nearly a year of trying to read this book I've finally finished it. So with an awesome title like "Death Star", it makes it sound like this book would deal with all those interesting bits of story concerning this monstrous beast of a weapon right? Wrong.

The book starts off about a few years before the movie "A New Hope" when the Death Star is in the final stages of being built. You get introduced to several characters which will all become "leads" to the story. Seriously that was my biggest problem with this book, there are so many main characters that you keep forgetting what this book's about. Each character also starts off in different parts of the universe doing different things, for example you have one guy who's a pilot, another who's a gunner, a prison guard, a cantina owner, a prisoner etc etc. So you get to continue each of these character's story every 60 or so pages when you're done rotating through all of them. Makes for a very inconsistent novel and confusing as I kept on forgetting the names of all these characters. The best part was seeing Darth Vader show up every now and then and seeing things from his point of view.

Thankfully near the end of the book all of these characters combine to form Captain Planet!! Well they all get together and decide "hey I don't like the empire because this station is evil", so then they try to desert the empire in the last 50 pages or so all while the Death Star is trying to blow up the rebel base (the part in the movie). The only real reason to finish reading is to see if they'll actually survive or just blow up with the station.

So in the end this book is dull, boring and doesn't have much to offer. It allows the star wars fan to see some parts of episode 4 from different point of views but that's about it. You also get to see what's going on in Vader's head when he's fighting Obi Wan which is pretty cool but not that great.

Demon Souls is PS3 exclusive made by Atlus. it's a hack'n slash with ps3 rpg elements, and magic, like the elder scrolls but it has a multiplayer(i'l explain later) and its a 3rd person game who got game of the year by gamespot.

ps: it's a long review, if you want to know why the game is unique, and why it is worth a purchase or a rent just skip to the 2nd paragraph in the gameplay section.

Story: if you'r looking for an rpg with a great story look away, the story is almost non exsistent, their are some cut scenes and you meet characters and you have some goals, but it's not like a true story. You'r in a place called the nexus and you have been chosen to defend the 5 kingdoms from demons and kill the "one" which brought misery and death to you'r world.

graphics: the enviorments, characters, and demons are breath taking. Don't expect the graphics to look like crysis they don't but for a console game they are really good, their is a lot of detail and atlus did a very good job with the colors textures and shadow in the game, the world looks real, it looks beautiful, and it sucks you right into the game. The armor and weapons look kick ass, and the demons look great.

gameplay: this is what makes the game so unique. Well it's a hack"n slash with rpg elements. Don't mistaken it to be a game like devil may cry, god of war, or bayonetta. The combat system is very similar to oblivion. The "l" and "r" buttons are each for a hand, you can hold two handed weapons such as cross bows, bows, two handed swords, two handed axes, or one handed weapons such as a sword an axe, with a shield, or another sword, axe, or katana in the other hand. Early in the game you choose your class, each class gives you diffrent items and weapons early on. You can use spells in the game, you can use items which gives your weapon fire damage or you can use a moon grass which gives you health. You can also equip rings which gives you a stat boost, to upgrade your stats like health, endurance, luck, magic .... you need souls, to get souls you have to kill demons.

Now this is what makes the game unique. No matter what you do in the tutorial you die, even if you kill the boss which kills you in one hit. That is because the game introduces you to the "soul" system. When you die you restart the level all over again, levels take about 15-30 minutes to complete, even if you'r at the boss you restart it, and if you are in human form your life is cut back in half. To return to human form you must defeat a boss, and use the "soul" you took from him, or you can find stones which make you go back to human form. The game can be played online or offline, it's the same game but online you can play co-op with freinds, you can post messages on the floor, if someone recomends them you will gain life, you can also get tips from messages others posted. It's a win-win situation. Also you see the soul of a player if he's in the same level of you, their are also blood stanes on the floor, you can see how a played died and learn from their mistake. When you die you leave a bloodstane on the floor, it contains all of your souls, if you die twice with taking back your souls the bloodstane disapears and you loose your soul. You can also invade the world of other players and kill them, in one boss fight you get to fight a player, or you can be the boss. The gameplay is more rewarding then fun, this game will make you cry like a little bitch, but if you get used to the system( and if you hit quit game when you die, you wont loose your human form and when you enter the game you will be at a check point ) then will the game be more rewarding then fun, you can play it both ways, even though if the 2nd way is a glitch.

value: well to beat the games it takes about 60 hours, , and since their is pretty much no story, you won't have to talk to the people you already talked to, and saved people you already saved, you'l just go and play the levels again. You can continue the game with your 1st character and restart, you'l be the same level have the same items but your oponnents will be 8% stronger. You can restart up to 32 times each time the oponents will get stronger, it is possible for it to restart more times but its impossible to win the 32nd time you die in one hit. It's a great game with lots of replay value, until know the top play spend about 600 hours on it, even though it came out less then a year ago.

story:7//10

graphics :10/10

gameplay: 9.9/10(0.1 points deducted for being too hard, if you like hard games it wont bother you, but you wiill still cry)

value:10/10

overall(not an average): 9.5

its a 3 year old game, i played it two years reaching level 20 withought doing the main story. two months ago i saw it on my shelf and decided to make a save and start the game all over again.

the story

the main quest in the game is saving tamriel(or cyrodil im not sure) from the daedric cults which have assasinated the emperor and opened oblivion gates in the whole kingdom. the story is interesting, one good thing about it is that it gives you a lot of rare items and makes you enter many guilds, that would atract people who prefer doing many side missions other then doing the main story. it is diffrent then all the side quests, and guild quests, theirs emotion i felt a bond btw me and the characters. i wanted to know more and that is what made me go into every oblivion gate and close it even though i was creeped out by the creatures in it and its setting. to complete everything in the game requires more then 500 hours of gameplay

graphics/presentation:

the graphics arent outstanding its a 3 year old game, but they arent bad, the voice acting is pretty good but the way characters move their lips and at what time is awful. sometimes they talk and their lips arent moving. the textures are good and smooth, their isnt screan tearing, the world looks a bit real, it makes you want to go and quest, and discover everything in it. i love the art style, seeing a screen shot of the kick ass armor, made me regret being a mage and not wearing armor.

gameplay: their are so many ways of coming into the game, you can be a warrior who wears armor and uses an axe, someone who just goes smashing in and barely uses spells . you can be like a rogue light armor a dagger, you can use a bow with arrows, and you can tend to use a some spells which help since you cant take lots of damage. or you can a mage using spells and stafe, or a battle mages you use weapons but are dependent on spells.

you can make potions, you can evern create spells when you enter the arcane university, theirs a thieves guild which helps you improve in lockpicking and sneaking, and assasins guild, a guild which hunts vampries, a fighthers guild, a mages guild and many more. you can invest in shops, barter with merchants, persuade people, their is so much content that you will get lost in the world.

value: the game is long, and hectic, their are many bugs in the game, some include a quest option or item not being their, a horse being stuck in a wall, glitches which give you infinite money or the possiblity to duplicate items(those are actually fun), or sometimes you equip your weapons in a retarted way that you cant fight properly. the glitches and bugs dont ruin the game so they arent that bad.

story:10/10

graphics:8.5/10

gameplay 9.5/10

value:10/10

overall(not an average):9.5/10

conclusion: great game youl keep on coming back for more and more, one of the best games ive played this generation and definatly the most adicating(i dont play WoW)

So, this isn't a review, but it might end up as one.

My main source for anime info Anime-Source.com does a lot of this, so I figured I'd try it too. Basically I've just started watching a series called Katanagatari and I'll fill in a few of my first impressions here.

As far as I can tell, the opening premise to the story is the gathering of 12 legendary katana that were forged by some twisted psychopath of a blacksmith.

The main character is the son of a man who was banished to a deserted island, and the inheritor of his family's sword style. I'm not entirely sure why it's called a sword style, as it's an unarmed style used to attack people who are using swords. Basically an unarmed anti-sword martial art.

His father was exiled for his role in the a civil war, and raised his two children on the island with him. As a result his son spent 20 years without seeing any other people, and training all day long.

Eventually a cute self-proclaimed strategist shows up and gets his help to collect the 12 demon swords for....., whatever reason.

Anyway, a few things are keeping me interested so far:
- he can kick swords in half
- he is sometimes referred to as a bear, as he's never cold
- being so unused to people, he has a hard time telling people apart, this leads to hilariousness

Here's a quick example:
In the first episode a ninja uses a high level technique to look exactly like the secondary main character (a cute young woman). He plans to sneak up and attack the main character while he is off guard. So he (while disguised) runs up to the main guy, and bam, main guy practically kicks him in half. He explains to the mashed ninja that he couldn't tell the ninja's original form apart from the girl anyway, and was just kicking on instinct.

In the second episode they go to a town for the first time, and the main guy starts talking to some little girl who is confused... and clearly doesn't know him. Then the main girl is like "hey... I'm over here". He's surprised by this then gets frustrated because he was hoping he could have discerned her apart from the rest of the people by her height.

I've finally gotten around to finish this series. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with it, it seems that they built the series to please everyone possible. They throw in Gundams, swords, samurai reference, knight reference, ships, empires, dragons and to please the woman they make the main character a girl and throw her into a love triangle. Oh and of course the epic music is very good.

They made a movie too but I'm not sure if i'll ever get around to watching it.

I'm not much of a reviewer so consider this more and opinion thread.
