Samurai 7

Samurai 7 is quite obviously based on one of the most famous and beloved samurai movies of all time "7 Samurai". The story is essentially the same as the movie.

A small village that is plagued by bandits for their food and women. Young women get kidnapped, rice gets stolen, etc... So, the village elder's daughter goes out to the "big city" to find herself 7 samurai. Well, she comes across one immediately, and he tells her that he'd need a team of 7 to win, so, that's where the title is from.

Anyway... a lot of the series is very similar to the movie, even a few of the jokes are the same (one samurai isn't actually of noble descent, but tries to fake it with a birth certificate he stole, the joke is that it says he is 7 years old). Of course, this is an anime, so it's far far far more ridiculous.

The bandits in the anime are these robotic harvest droids, the setting is that weird "post-alien technology advent in the middle of feudal times" that is somewhat popularish. Think StarWars without people going to space. People live in these crude old-timey dwellings and walk dirt roads, but they also have robot, energy weapons, and whatnot.

Sounds cheesy? Nope. It's very well done and there is a lot of action in the beginning. Unfortunately it gets rather dull near the end.

Did I mention it has possibly the best opening scene of almost any anime I've ever seen? Take a look:

All in all if the series kept up after episode 15 through to the end it would have been an easy 9/10, but it didn't, so it gets a 7/10.

Thats so weird, i was just reading a review about this anime. I was thinking of watching it. What are the odds.
