The OVA of Lodoss War came out about 8 years before the TV series (subtitled Chronicles of the Brave Knight). It is not quite a precursor to the TV series as I had thought it to be, but rather a different version of the same story. It's 13 episodes long.

While the TV series takes place after Parn has established himself as a knight and centers around Spark's ascent to knighthood (I know... dumb name), this series is about Parn becoming a reputable knight.

The twist is that the timelines are approximately the same. The OVA starts 6 years before the TV series, but ends at the same time. Parn only reaches the level he starts at in the TV series after the OVA ends.

Anyway, the story is essentially the same as the TV series. They need to kill Shooting Star, an epic dragon. They need to stop an evil sorcerer from killing all living things, but this series also has a "Dark Emperor" that they need to take out.

It's not as polished as the TV series, and far less fan-service-y, but I still liked it a lot. I think it was better than the TV series in a number of ways. The only downside is that Parn is a bit annoying...

Now, if you've looked into Lodoss before, you'll have noticed that Deedlit is EXTREMELY popular. I had no idea why, until seeing this series. She is, quite possibly, my all time favorite female anime character. In this series (not the TV series) she is so incredibly cute all the time, it's almost retarded.

What an awesome character.
I also liked Pirotess (the dark equivalent of Deedlit) a lot better in this series than in the TV series.

Well, if I go on any longer I'll start ruining things. So that's all.

So, cons: terrible opening theme, Parn sucks, and it's shorter
Pros: Deedlit is awesome, and it's got more story

You don't really have to watch one in order to watch the other, but you should probably watch this one first, so you know why people like Deedlit. I mean, I couldn't care less for her after watching the TV series. She was just boring, but having seen the OVA now I can see hints of her original character development in the TV series character Leaf.

Anyway, over for real now.

Btw, this is Deedlit:

Yea ive aways been a fan of deedlit.
Started trying to watch these. Not too bad. YOu can definitely see how is was pulled off a D&D session. Some things are very forced and predictable though.
Well, remember that "Adapted from D&D Replays" doesn't necessarily mean that they actually had a game that went *exactly* as the anime progresses.

For example, the replays were done in a party by party basis. So, one replay was Parn's party playing through, another was Orson's, etc.

So, the fact that Orson and Parn cooperate was kind of contrived, who knows from what. I'm certainly not trying to read those manuscripts. There's massive volumes of the stuff that they compiled down into 13 episodes then later into 27.
