I hope I got that title right....

Anyway, as you may have guessed it, "When the Cicadas Cry" is a story about a month or so during the summer during which, well, you can hear cicadas making noise.

The genre here isn't all that common as far as anime goes, it's murder mystery.
Essentially during this period of time tragic events occur, namely murder. People get killed for semi-unknown reasons in bizarre circumstances and typically there is an answer or some kind of give-away as to who is actually doing the kidding. I say "typically" because this happens more than once, and it's always different.

Essentially the summer days go by, and people get killed, or go insane, or both, and when something happens (I can't say what...) the series seems to start all over from page one. The important thing to remember is that this is not a new story every time, it is the same story, told again with different occurrences. Paranoia and investigation are major driving factors in this series.

So, who is reliving these days over and over in such a way that the story is coherent? You'll have to figure that out yourself, and you won't know until you start watching part 2 of the series.

The crux of the series is to figure out how to get a small town to survive the summer months. It's twisted, comedic, and semi-brutal.

My only gripe is that the art in the first season was kinda terrible. Everyone's hair was like... mega-80s-esque helmet style. It made everyone (well just a few of the girls) look like bobbleheads. The music was epic, perfect for the creepy, quirky, anime it was.

Just so everyone is clear, parts 1 and 2 are incredibly different, to the point that you don't need to watch 1 in order to watch 2. Of course, watching 1 after 2 would be impossible. That's just how it is.

This was the inspiration for the adventure story in the forums. I had intended to let people die more easily, the story eventually resetting after something happens (like everyone dying). Sen and I decided that would be frustrating, so we kept away from it.

I give it a 7/10
