anyone else watching the olympics this year?

I'm not usually into watching sports but usually watch the opening and closing ceremonies. So far they're pretty good.

All the best to every country
Stop killing athletes.
Ugh, so far the opening ceremony is disappointing. I stopped watching when the duet began.

What other country would bore the world with a 20 minute display of native culture? We couldn't even modernize it like everyone else would. Instead we just do what people have been doing for hundreds of years. Wooo....

Then Brian Adams? When they were saying it was going to be a famous Canadian singer I thought it would be Celine Dion, but I guess she was too expensive.

Time and a place, seriously.
When China did their games, did they bring out every little tribe that once inhabited their lands?

"Ooooh this is the Goom Gong Tig Tribe of the China-ish region, they stand before you wearing bones and whatnot and say hello to you in a language only 5 people know. Ooooooh"

No, instead they had awesome everything.
Did you watch after the duet? That whole theatric thing is pretty cool
I watched a few seconds of the "fiddle", which looked like it was just a recording.

You have to admit, the "opening" was stupid.

I'm kind of surprised that the "Metis" are actually considered one of the first nations.
Like... really now, isn't "Metis" just a group of half French half "some random native tribe"?
Where whatever tribe that was would be the "first nation", not the Metis.

It's like saying that I descend from the ancient peoples of Germano-Slovakia, because I'm half German and half Slovak.

You look at the other native nations, they're all wearing tribal stuff.
The Metis are wearing clothes that an average person in the 1700s would wear.
They're not fooling anyone.

Too bad the first nations never had any written history. They probably would realize that if they traced back 100 years from when they were categorized by the European settlers that there were really only like... 2 groups instead of a hundred.
you're confusing two groups...there are the Metis which is the mixed tribe you speak of and then there's the Meti (sp?) pronounced differently which are the ones shown in the opening.

Alot of canadians seem confused by the ceremonies but that just goes to show you how eastern canada is detached from western canada in terms of culture.
Either way, the traditional tribal outfits of the "Meti" look like 18th century Quebec clothes.

The ceremony wasn't confusing, it was just dumb.
I always thought you were German Rojerton
Hey Canada! Stop being an ice-hole!
