Although it may have been overshadowed by Naruto because it's not quite as kid-geared, Fullmetal Alchemist was an excellent series. So, here's some info:
Ok, before I get too far in, I have to warn you that it has what is quite possibly the dullest dub of all time. Do not, and I repeat, do not, for any reason, watch this in English. Everyone sounds like they're sleep-talking, it's awful. It was dubbed by the same people who ruined Witch Hunter Robin, and if it wasn't, it sounds like it's the same anime.
In the world of Fullmetal Alchemist there is basically one kind of magical element. It's a bit more sciency than traditional magic, but essentially alchemy is the art of rearranging matter. So, rearranging the clay in a brick into a small sculpture. Or perhaps turn a giant tree into a pillar of flowers. Punch a slab of metal and rearrange it into a buckshot of bullets. You get the picture.
So, in the world, if you were anybody, you were an alchemist. Alchemy is a science, but also an art of battle.
The story is about two young Alchemist brothers, Ed and Al, who are on a quest to save their mother. Sounds cutsey eh? Yeah, not so much.
Their mother died, and they decide to try to revive her by using alchemy on her corpse. Basically, rearrange the dead body into a living one.
Of course, this is a taboo of alchemy (you'll hear taboo a lot during this anime) and things go horrendously wrong. Ed looses an arm and a leg to the havoc, and Al looses his body. Yes, his entire body. Ed uses some high level alchemy to affix Al's consciousness to a nearby suit of armor.
During the main time-line Ed is a young, but hardened State Alchemist (Alchemist working for the Government) and Al accompanies him, as a giant, empty, suit of armor.
They travel around the world searching for a way to get Al's body back, and perhaps, just perhaps, their mother.
They battle a whole host of psychotic enemies, twisted nutcases, and terrorists. It really was quite the ride.
8.5/10
