So, I go with my dad to the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech game last Saturday with very disappointing results, but my dad meets up with one of his old roommates from Tech before the game. He and his wife work for NASA in Houston, Texas. There are about 5 planned liftoffs left before all the shuttle are retired.

Here's the question, the wife (also a Tech grad) works directly with the astronauts and could get us as close as you can get to the shuttle during takeoff. Inside the fence and all that. Is it worth trying to go see and taking off several days to drive down to Cape Canaviral for a launch? I would have to take off several days in case of weather delays and all that kind of stuff. Is this the ultimate nerd experience, or overrated?
I would go. It's not everyday you get to see a launch up close.
It is if you live in Florida...

On a side note, my girlfriend has been wanting to go watch a shuttle launch. I guess I should get on that. Perhaps I'll see you there?
It probably is worth it. Im usually too lazy to initiate actually going to something like that. Ill stick with my sonic boom and then watching a small fireball blaze through the air from afar.
I reckon you should see it once in your life. Anything more than that would be a waste a not a novelty.
I'd go see it sen
I'd go - sounds like an oppertunity that shouldn't be missed or you may regret it for the rest of your life. Bring the camera's and the video recorder (and the family) to record the event for posterity --and you never know - you could get something that 'wow's Utube and get a billion hits...

QFT

It's something few people outside of countries like yours will ever see.
If it's still a few weeks away then YES go...wait for your shirt to come in, put it on. Snap a pic of yourself giving a thumbs up with the shuttle launching in the background.

It would be epic. Very few people could have a spread the FEAR pic with a shuttle launching behind them.
Only thinking of yourself I see...

There are about 5 launches left. One in February, but that's a night launch, and then about one a month until Summer I think. Not going to go to the last one, as that will be extremely crowded. Have to work on the dates for this.
