To start things off, let me say that I went into this movie expecting great effects and a cheap story... my expectations were pretty low.
So a quick recap of the story, the ancient Mayans have predicted that the end of the world will happen on december 21 2012 due to planet alignments and solar cycles or something. Turns out that in 2009 they discover that the center of the earth is heating up and this in turn causes the earths crust to go all wacky and shift and junk. Though the scientists don't predict this will happen until some time later (they later discover they only had until 2012). So anyways governments get together in secrecy and prepare a plan to save the human race. Fast forward 3 years and it's the apocalypse and everyone is trying to save their lives while the earth is tearing itself apart from all places and massive volcanoes are spewing lava and ash everywhere.
Does this movie have flaws? Yes and lots of them. Does it have cheesy parts? Oh god yes but all an all does it entertain? Hell yeah!
So I said I was expecting great effects from the trailers, well this movie delivers! I've never seen such amazing effects so well done before, one of my favorite scenes is when they're driving through california as it's ripping apart and sinking into the ocean. Roads are being lifted, skyscrapers are crumbling etc. There's so much debris everywhere and so much detail in the destruction it's crazy. You could probably put the movie on pause every 2 seconds and find thousands of little details the animators put in. Simply awesome.
The story is kind of cliche with a divorced couple having to come back together to save their family and they're just trying the whole movie to find a way to save themselves...your usual stuff but they do take some new approaches to how to tell this kind of story. Some parts are cheesy and annoying like when they make you want to think someone is dead but you just know he's not dead. For a main actor to die, he needs sad music, a monologue and finally a death scene. They would not kill a main actor off screen. Just not in the cards.
So my final say, going to the movies? Watch this then, you'll get the most value out of it at 3 hours long and it will keep you entertained throughout the whole 3 hours. If you're in no hurry but have Hi-def at home then sure wait for blue ray and get it then.
