Furbies aren't a cultural milestone.
They don't make the list.

You can't forget about them though. Too many loved to hate them.

Doesn't mean they define an age, start an age, or contribute to anything.
Just because they're memorable doesn't mean they make the list.
Street Fighter was better than One Must Fall, but it wasn't the original, therefore it looses too.

then you can argue the tamagochi doesn't belong on the list either...it just happened and died off...kind of like pogs.
ugh I remember waking up in the middle of the night to feed my stupid dinosaur. ARGH, I can't believe there was a stupid toy that got me to do that!!! I wouldn't even wake up in the middle of the night to launch attack in TW!
bad memories...

Tamagochi was the first digital pet. I haven't decided that it makes the list quite yet, but it was the first toy requiring constant attention with a lifestyle-like gameplay that would could span a month or more of continuous play.

You could look at it as a precursor to The Sims, but Maxis has been making sim games long before tamagochi ever came along. So really you have to take your pick on that.

I'm thinking digital pets and sims aren't really one and the same.
One of them requires interaction that can't be "turned off".
Still not sure if it's going to make it to the list.

I was more of classifying it as virtual life or creations. Games that were about taking care of a "living" thing.

I was thinking of it as less of the actual gameplay, but more of a ubiquitous electronic device.
Before all the kids were carrying around cell phones and mp3 players they were all carrying around tamagochis. The tamagochi wasn't made to stay at home, it's meant for your pocket, you carry it wherever you are for continual interaction.
I think it's a distinct philosophy that began with that item.
