This year I'm heading to an anime convention for the first time
Largest (and possibly the only one) in Canada. I have no idea what kind of strange things go there but I've found a few weird/interesting features in their programs.
- video game tournaments
- Kenjutsu demonstrations (sword fighting)
- anime wrestling
- gay sex 101 (WTF?)
- Hentai session (
)
- of course cosplayers of all type
- anime...of course
- an anime rave??
- hopefully a crap load of asians to gawk at
Will post a follow up to this thread after the weekend....stay tuned
***UPDATE***
Ah and so it has come to past. After a mere 5 hours of sleep, me and some friends (including Dantron and Rojerton which btw surprised me by showing up) woke up at a daring 7:00 am to go where almost no one has gone before.
Immediately upon arrival we were filled with cosplayers EVERYWHERE, characters from all shows walking along streets, parking lots, hotels...the whole district was packed. After about 2 km of walking we finally arrived at the end of the line and there we spent about 20 mins standing next to the most annoying girl ever who couldn't articulate well and couldn't keep her mouth shut for more then 3 seconds. Plus she HAD to yell out every character as they would walk by...sigh...quite a bad first impression..
The rest of the day was filled with booths upon booths of anime, manga, action figures, games, weaponry, japanese food (I got a Mario energy drink!), bed sheets with a picture of a girl laying on her back on them, samurai armor, posters and anything in between. I myself was able to pick up a very nice Hylian Shield (from zelda). I can't believe I didn't think of putting it over my head after buying it and singing the tune...sigh disappointed with myself.
As far as events we saw some cosplay chess which was meh...amateurs acting fake scenes wasn't all that great to watch (as they picked chess pieces from the crowd). There was also some anime wrestling which we only watched for about 5 mins. Outside there was thousands of people dancing, posing, hugging and doing just about anything anime ppl do. We quickly discovered that ALL the panels at these things are horrendously boring...it involves sitting in a room listening to some old guys talk about their lives and asking questions! ARGH It's like going to school...needless to say I didn't stay in those very long. Instead I went around asian hunting and played some Go (which I won 3 out of 4 of my games
). I did attend a "how to pick up a gf at an anime convention" panel but left after they said the first two things to make sure you do is bathe and have confidence (useless!). Tried going to a webcomic panel but that proved pointless for my needs as well. I also met a really strange kind of guy while playing Go...I never knew of the term furry before. It means ppl who are into sexy animals dressed like humans (ex. bonnie from Space Jam)...anyways I beat him at Go too.
The day ended with some viewing of some 80s cartoon which turned out to be pretty entertaining and funny...and some were just way out there. You were left more confused then anything at the end. Once that was done, we stayed for some late night HENTAI!!!
...with a room full of ppl and a girl sitting next to me with her mother
(she was over 20 so don't get any wrong ideas). The hentai was called something like Black Bible and it involved rituals, demons and lots of sex...it was weird. The first nudity scene was shocking as hell...it's two girls and you know everything is going well...then the camera shows you the first full frontal nudity of the anime and then suddenly without ANY warning (not even a change in music) the girl instantly grows a penis! like wholly hell! I take a look to my right and see Rojerton all happy and smiling...I think I may have learned something new about him over the weekend
And as for the hot asian chicks...I was a bit dissapointed. I'd say there was maybe...5-10 that I saw...maybe I'll use a tactic I saw for next year, some guy had a sign on his back that said "hug me" and the asians were flocking to him like flies to a terd.
So that sums up my anime day in what I hope wasn't too many words. Next year should be better and I've already got my cosplay started hehe...and I have a year to prepare some tavern merchandising and marketing stuff to get this place some attention.
