I was a bit skeptical about seeing this movie as I am with most newer animation films. I always get the impression that the movie gets hyped based on successes like Shrek, Finding Nemo, Toy Story etc and know that just one of these days there's going to be an animated movie that will flop!
Anyways, turns out the movie was quite entertaining, not sure if I would put it up there with Shrek goodness but there are quite a few good parts and the movie doesn't try to be something else, it's pure simple fun and you can easily see this when main plot elements are kind of rushed with humour. The movie has just enough story to have a movie that makes sense but not enough to bore you.
For example the villain gets no mass introduction or real explanation for his motives. He's evil and wants to conquer a world just for the hell of it...why not? We don't need anything more from an animated villain.
The story is about some rare meteorite containing some super material crashes on earth and smokes this girl in the head thus transforming her into a monster (a giant super strong woman). She gets sent to a monster retention center and meets up with the other 4 monsters in the movie: some version of the swamp thing, the blob, a super intelligent cockroach scientist and a godzilla sized silk worm. The villain of the story needs the super material for his own evil purposes and thus goes to earth to extract it from the girl...and thus comes the monsters vs aliens. Aliens arrive on earth and show hostility so the monsters are sent to beat them, why? Because the president had no better idea (that's what they say in the movie).
I love how the movie doesn't take itself seriously and just tries to have fun. The best character in the movie is obviously the blob who is obviously the comic relief of the movie. Every time he's on screen you can expect him to make you laugh or at least smile. Love it at the end when he's trying to hit on a lime green jello lol The animators were very creative with their characters.
Final verdict: If you have a family, a girlfriend or a younger movie goer with you then yes this movie is worth going to watch otherwise just wait until you can rent it and you'll get your 4-5$ worth.
