So for a while now the otaku community has been raving about Touhou this and Touhou that. So I had to check it out.

Turns out it's this massively popular Doujin series of "hell shooter"-style games. For those of you who don't know, Doujin is the asian-centric version of "indie" stuff. Generally hobbyists who get together at conventions and do stuff for fun. So, there's lots of Doujin manga, and Doujin games. Typically, Doujin is confused with porn because as you can imagine, one of the most popular uses for "fan created content" is by making porn versions of all their favorite things.

........anyway. This isn't like that. Touhou takes the planes out of hell-shooters, and replaces them with magical shrine maidens. Why? Because I guess after seeing one plane you've seen 'em all and would rather watch a cute woman in a robe flying around.... shooting magic instead of bullets. Interesting concept.

If you're not familiar with a "Hell Shooter" think Xavious, Grind Stormer, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, etc. Bird's eye scrolling shooters featuring massive amounts of obstacles ranging from suicidal planes to lasers, missiles, and bullets.

Anyway... this game is insane. Seriously, "Easy" difficulty is still crazy. There's about 14 Touhou shooters and I'm playing one called "Perfect Cherry Blossom" because I thought it was the latest one, turns out it wasn't.

It's seriously ridiculous.

Yeah I posted a video of this somewhere, maybe just as an insane boss fight. It wasn't this exact video, as this one is from the actual game I'm playing, and not just some random insane boss fight.

If I remember correctly the one I posted last was from Imperishable Night, and this is Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Anyway... I was a BIG fan of Raptor: Call of the Shadows, and while I liked being able to customize your weapons in Raptor, this is pretty damn good. Like, when the bullets are flying at your at insane speed and intensity you just have to laugh "aaaaaaahahahaha shit shit shit shiiiiiiiiit ahahahahahahahaha!".

I know. All the songs in that game have a similar feeling.

They're all sequenced by hobbyists in the Touhou project. Intense eh?

I'll be the first to admit it here, I'm not good enough at video games to play that work of insanity.
